Bosnia in War versus Bosnia in Peace

Bosnia in War  & Bosnia in Peace (2018 & 2019)

Sarajevo
Sarajevo was besieged nearly 1,500 days during the war. The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. The siege lasted three times longer than the Battle of Stalingrad and more than a year longer than the Siege of Leningrad. A total of 13,952 people were killed during the siege. An average of over 300 shells hit the city every day with a devastating peak of 3,777 shells hitting the city on 22nd July 1993. For more info see also:

 Sarajevo - Bright Side
Today Sarajevo is the capital of the Bosnian country and is the crossroad of East and West, Catholic, Jewish, Orthodox and Islam, Habsburg and Ottoman history and that all in a convinced place. Very beautiful to visit. (see also the pictures below)

Ahmici - Neretva Valley - Central Bosnia
I was also based for a few month in Santici. Ahmici, only a few hundred metres from this Dutch compounds, was the scene of horrible ethnical cleansing and only after the war I recognized how horrible this cleansing was done. In this small village approx. 120 civilians where killed, stabbed to death, shot and burnt. The youngest was only a few months old and the oldest was 82.

More about the story of the Ahmici massacre can be found in the following movie:

Mostar - Along the river Neretva
Between June 1993 and April 1994 the city was besieged which resulted in many deaths of civilians, a cut off of humanitarian aid, damage and destruction of the building and houses and the blowing up of the historic Stari Most bridge. Hostilities ended with the signing of the Washington Agreement in March 1994 and the establishment of the Croat–Bosniak federation. More about the story of the Siege of Mostar:

Mostar - Old bridge in the city centre

Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in Bosnia. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most visited landmarks, and is considered an exemplary piece of Islamic architecture in the Balkans. Today Mostar is the number 1 touristic hotspot of Bosnia and worthwile to visit. See for some beautiful pictures:

Neretva Valley - Between Sarajevo and Mostar
