Blog 08: Zvornik

Zvornik

In Zvornik we stayed in the very good hotel Vidikovac. (formally 4 stars but with an excellent 5 star service).
Zvornik was the epicenter of the East-Bosnian massacres which began in Zvornik and ended in Srebrenica. The Zvornik massacre was against Bosniaks and other non-Serb civilians in and around Zvornik by Serb paramilitary groups ("Arkanovci", Territorial Defence units, White Eagles, Yellow Wasps) at the beginning of the Bosnian War in 1992. Estimates show that 40,000 Bosniaks were expelled from the Zvornik district. It was the second city in Bosnia and Herzegovina that was  taken over by Serb forces during the Bosnian War. A total of 3,936 people were killed (official numbers) or went missing in the Zvornik municipality between 1992 and 1995, however local citizen are mentioning that these official numbers are much too low.
The story of the war in and around Zvornik can be found in the following movies.
Today it is a safe place. From Zvornik you can easily travel to Mali-Zvornik, Serbia at the other site of the river. In a big shopping mall prices are really attractive compare with Bosnia and Europe. A trip to the old castle of Kulagrad will give you an good impressive of Zvornik’s surroundings.
